Welcome to Systems Engineering at Loughborough
Systems Engineering is one of the key sections of the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering but is taught by a fully integrated multi-disciplinary team drawn from a number of academic departments within and beyond the University boundaries.
The combination of specialised modules, industrial input, sponsorship opportunities and excellent employment prospects make this a highly attractive and rewarding programme of study.
Systems engineering is a relatively new and very exciting field, quite different in its approach from conventional engineering disciplines.
As a systems engineer you will be managing and implementing complex, inter-disciplinary projects through all their phases including specification, design, development and maintenance.
To do so effectively you will need and will acquire in-depth knowledge across a wide range of subjects.
Key skills required by System Engineers are the ability to analyse a problem, taking into account all the factors involved, organise work on solutions into manageable components and reintegrate these sub-systems into an efficient and effective whole.
It is this special study of the interaction of sub-systems that sets Systems Engineers apart.
Award Winning
The University is pleased to be part of the Royal Academy of Engineering's Visiting Professor scheme for Integrated System Design.
This programme fosters industry–academia links and aims to help universities to teach engineering design to undergraduates in a way that relates to real professional practice. Professor Paul Davies from Thales joined the university in 2007.
For those who would like to know more about the Academy's view of systems engineering, it has published a booklet which lays down 6 simple principles covering the design of any integrated system. It is intended as a guide for educators, students and practising engineers, and sets out to demystify the design of complex projects.
